The hearth has a combustion air supply hopper placed between side walls of a frame. The combustion air supply hopper is located under strands (1a, 1b) e.g. upper and lower strands, of a chain grid. The air supply hopper comprises partitions (10, 11) transversely extending between the side walls. The strands of the grid cooperate with top and bottom edges of head and foot of the partitions by a sliding contact. The strands are sealed in a manner to divide the air supply hopper into caissons (12-14) sealed against one another.
