[Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XII] In an electric arc furnace comprising a hearth, a roof which is relatively displaceable with respect to the hearth to allow charging to be effected from above, an auxiliary ring carrying the roof and electrode holders and independent of both roof and hearth and means bearing upon the underside of the auxiliary ring for lifting it with the roof, the auxiliary ring 12, Fig. 1, comprises a portion of inverted T-section of which the horizontal member 13 rests freely upon the hearth 17, the vertical member 13A surrounds and retains the freely mounted roof 10 and the outer member 13B is subjected to the action of the lifting means 23. A sand seal 14 is provided between the roof ring 11 and the auxiliary ring 12, and a flange 15 on the auxiliary ring slips into a sand seal 16 on the hearth 17. The electrode holders 20 are operated by an hydraulic cylinder 22 supported by a guide 18 secured to the auxiliary ring 12. Fig. 2 shows a furnace of small capacity in which the hydraulic cylinders such as 23 are mounted on the auxiliary ring 12 and bear upon a trolley 24 running on rollers 25 movable on cantilevers 26 supported on the hearth 17. The roof is displaced laterally for charging purposes by an hydraulic cylinder 27, and the furnace is tipped by a cylinder 28. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the mechanism for lifting and traversing the roof is supported on pillars 30 independently of the furnace. Articulated levers 31 are arranged between the trolley 24 and the ring 12. The furnace and roof may be so arranged that after the roof and electrodes have been raised the hearth may be moved away from beneath the roof. Fig. 5 shows a further modification in which hydraulic lifting means 23 mounted on a frame 35 actuate levers 34 which engage the auxiliary ring 12. Guides 36, 37 and rollers 37A are provided to ensure vertical movement of the roof and to permit tilting of the furnace. Fig. 6 shows tilting mechanism for the furnace comprising levers 38 actuated by hydraulic cylinders 39 attached to a rocker base 40 which in turn travels upon rollers 41 operated by a cylinder 27. The transferring rocking cylinders are controlled by valves which prevent transfer movement while rocking is being effected. |
