<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress vibration associated with the fluctuation of internal pressure in a crank chamber without largely changing the constitution of an engine. <P>SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine includes a crank chamber with a crankshaft being arranged therein, a balance shaft provided with an offset balance weight and arranged parallel to the crankshaft, a balance shaft chamber for accommodating the balance shaft, and an opening formed in the balance shaft chamber to communicate the balance shaft chamber with the crank chamber. An opening/closing means for opening/closing the opening is arranged in the opening.
