A data processing system (20) for playing an online card game such as poker. The system comprises a gaming server (22), a number of portals (23a, 23b), and a number of client devices (25). Participants in the game using the client devices can opt in or out of a bad beat feature. If a participant activates the bad beat feature, the participant is eligible for winning at least part of a bad beat progressive jackpot. The jackpot may be funded by tokens purchased by participants or a rake from the hand's wagers, for example. The apportionment of the bad beat jackpot may be triggered by the participant losing the hand despite having cards that should provide a significant likelihood of winning the game. |
