[Class 78 (i)] A conveyer apparatus for articles such as the stems or stem tubes of electric lamps comprises a first conveyer having holders for the articles, a second conveyer adjacent to the first andhaving holders for receiving the articles, means for transferring the articles from the holders of the first conveyer to those of the second and for intermittently indexing the second conveyer, and control means mounted along the path of the first conveyer and operable by the presence of an article in a holder of the first conveyer to cause the indexing means to be operated only when an article is present in the holder. The first conveyer is bodily reciprocated to transfer an article to the second conveyer when the latter has been indexed so as to receive the article. As shown in Fig. 1, the conveyer 10 advances the holders 13 step-by-step to an unloading station, where the articles are transferred automatically to the storage conveyer 11. At a position A of the conveyer 10, a stem 14 is located between an air nozzle 17 and a vane 18 connected to a mercury switch 20. In the absence of a stem at the position A, the switch 20 breaks the circuit of a solenoid 40, the armature 41 of which actuates the shaft 38 of the conveyer sprocket 39 through a lever 43 and pawl- and-ratchet gear 49, 47. The movement of the conveyer 11 advances an empty holder 13 to the loading position C, and brings the stem 14 from position A to position B, in which transfer to the conveyer 11 is effected automatically by a sideways movement of the sprocket 15. The bracket 27 supporting the pin 28 of the sprocket, and also carrying the air nozzle 17, has a lower portion 31 connected by a spring 35 to a lever 32 bearing against a stationary stop screw 34, and serving to transfer the stem 36. The taper of the flared upper end of the stem 36 enables sideways pressure to raise it in the opening 131 of the holder 13 of the conveyer 10 and move it across to the holder of the conveyer 11. |
