<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a travel support device for a vehicle which encourages a driver to change traffic lanes to avoid and alleviate traffic congestion by improving determination accuracy of a traffic flow. <P>SOLUTION: A travel support device for a vehicle comprises: determination means which determines a state of a traffic flow on a traffic lane that an own vehicle is travelling thereon based on an acceleration of the own vehicle as well as an inter-vehicle distance with neighboring another vehicle; candidate traffic lane setting means which sets a changeable candidate traffic lane based on vehicle information on the traffic lane adjacent to the traffic lane that the own vehicle is travelling; and traffic lane change facilitation means which encourages a driver to change the traffic lanes to the traffic lane set by the candidate traffic lane setting means in accordance with a determination result by the determination means. The determination means outputs the determination result to encourage the driver to change traffic lanes when the state of the traffic flow is determined to be in a critical area which exists in a transition period from the state of a free traffic flow having a low chance of leading to the traffic congestion to the state of a mixed traffic flow having a mixture of a braking state and an acceleration state. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
