PURPOSE: A welding apparatus and method is provided to calculate a welding speed and the temperature before the next pass welding. CONSTITUTION: A welding apparatus comprises a welding unit, a temperature measuring unit(20), a voltage measuring unit(30), a current measuring unit(40), and a speed measuring unit(50). The welding unit comprises a welding head, which welds along a weld surface(F) in between base metal(M). The temperature measuring unit measures the temperature of the welded surface. The voltage measuring unit measures the voltage between the welding head and the base metal. The current measuring unit measures the current following through the base metal. The speed measuring unit measures the speed of welding the welding head along a weld length of a weld surface. The weld length of the base metal is inputted in the speed measuring unit in advance. The speed measuring unit calculates the speed by measuring the time from when the welding head contacts with the base metal to when the welding is finished.
