<p>A catalytic converter is used to reduce emission of pollutants (CO. HC, NOx) from IC engine exhaust gases comprises a clearance mode (A) in which fuel is fed into the converter to eliminate oxygen, following a mode in which no fuel is delivered to the combustion chamber.
