The method involves determining (9) synonyms of a keyword e.g. French keyword, and performing (11) a contextual analysis of the keyword and each of its synonyms in an electronic document database. A distribution of contextual keyword and contextual distribution each of its synonyms in the database are compared (12). A semantic score of proximity of the synonyms is provided as a function of equivalent distribution between contextual keyword and synonym. A reduction of the number of synonyms of the keyword is performed (13) based on score value of semantic proximity of each synonym. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an utilization of a synonym base (2) a synonym filtering system.
