<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus detector capable of properly detecting the focus state of a main object to be tracked. <P>SOLUTION: The focus detector includes a first tracking part 170 tracking the position of an image corresponding to a first reference image corresponding to a first object to be targeted from an image imaged through an optical system, a second tracking part 170 tracking the position of an image corresponding to a second reference image corresponding to a second object different from the first object, and a focus detection part 170 detecting the focus state in a focus detection position set in a photographic screen. When the position of the image corresponding to the first reference image is in the focus detection position, the focus detection part 170 detects the focus state in the position of the image corresponding to the first reference image.
