<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator apparatus that can secure reliable brake performance obtained as a third-level safety device with a simple structure and can reduce a burden required for maintenance after operation of the apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: In the elevator apparatus, an emergency stopping device is provided in a lower part of a lifter, and an enforced brake device 6 is disposed in a vertically projected plane of the emergency stopping device. The enforced brake device 6 includes brake shoes 61a, 61b that slidably contact with a guide rail 3, and a retention unit 62 for retaining the brake shoes 61a, 61b along the guide rail 3. The emergency stopping device is contacted with the enforced brake device 6 is contacted because of abnormal descent of the lifting device.
