An apparatus (300) for generating a magnetic field within field reversed topology within a chamber for magnetically containing plasma ions within the chamber and an electrostatic field within the chamber for electrostatically containing plasma electrons within the chamber, comprising a cylindrically shaped chamber (310) having a longitudinal axis (315), a magnetic field generator coupled to the chamber along the longitudinal axis (315) of the chamber, a plasma source (345) coupled to the chamber to inject a plasma containing electrons and ions into the chamber, ion beam injectors (340) to inject neutralized ion beams into the chamber. A flux coil comprising a plurality of coils wound in parallel to create an azimuthal electric field within the vessel about the flux coil when the rate at which the current is directed through the coil is increase, wherein the azimuthal electric field is suitable for causing rotation of the plasma (335) and for the formation of a poloidal magnetic field about the rotating plasma, the poloidal and applied magnetic fields combining to forma field reversed configuration (FRC) magnetic field. |
