PURPOSE: A character and barcode recognizing device for simultaneously recognizing characters and barcodes and a control method thereof are provided to increase a barcode recognition rate by reducing information recognition time for the whole image and using a low resolution image. CONSTITUTION: A photographing unit(110) photographs an image including a character image and a barcode. A control unit(120) classifies the image into a character area including a character image and a barcode area including the barcode. The control unit recognizes the character in the character area by performing character recognition for the character area and recognizes the barcode in the barcode area by performing barcode recognition for the barcode area. The control unit includes a blocking unit blocking the image, a block analyzing unit analyzing shape and location information, and a classification unit.
