[Class 120 (ii)] In a yarn or like winding machine in which the yarn is wound on a rotating package by a longitudinally extending strand-engaging member having a helical formation on its periphery for engaging the yarn with relative reciprocation between the member and the package, the member is rotatable about its longitudinal axis and means are provided for turning it about such axis to advance the yarn and the traverse stroke progressively along the length of the package. As shown the traverse rod 48 is reciprocated longitudinally of the cop tube b and package B from a cam-actuated rod 25 and annular arm 46, so that the rod 48 is offset from the rod 25; a screw thread 50 is formed on the rod 48 to engage the yarn y and lead it to the package B and the rod is intermittently rotated to feed the yarn along the package by a ratchet wheel 53 on a bushing splined on the rod and actuated by a pawl 60 pivoted in the end of an arm 61 pivoted on a pin 62 in bearings projecting from a fixed member 40. The arm 61 carries a roller 75 which at each traverse of the rod 40 engages a cam member 71 adjustably fixed to the arm 46, and the arm 61 being thereby rocked on its,pin 62 and moving the pawl 60 to rotate the ratchet 53 and rod 48; adjustment of the cam member 71 determines the amount the ratchet and traverse rod are rotated at each traverse. A spring 64 maintains the pawl in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel, a spring 67 coiled about the pin 62 tends to move the pawl rearwards on the teeth of the ratchet wheel,a stop finger 68 limits such rearwards movement and a detent pawl 69 prevents backward movement of the ratchet wheel. The package B formed has a taper corresponding to that of the cop tube b but by giving the screw thread or other helical formation on 'the traverse rod a varying pitch the rate of feed of the yarn along the rod may be regulated to build a cop having a cylindrical instead of a tapered shape. In a modification the traverse rod is in alignment with the reciprocated rod 25 and is coupled to it by a connection allowing it to be rotated independently of the rod 25. The ratchet wheel is formed on or attached to a sleeve which is slidably keyed to the outer end of the traverse rod and has an annular slot engaging a pin projecting from the bearing for the outer end of the rod and the pawl engaging the ratchet wheel is carried by a rockable lever mounted in the bearing and having an angularly disposed toe piece which is engaged by a cone cam adjustably secured to the outer end of the traverse rod. In a further form the traverse rod is connected to the rod 25 by a one way ball or roller clutch which is rotated at each traverse to feed the yarn along the traverse rod by a stud or an arm projecting from the machine frame and engaging a cam groove in the periphery of a sleeve of the clutch. |
