The method involves outputting of a first signal over a first output (2) by a base module (1), and checking whether the first signal is received by an extension module (20) at a first input (22). A second signal is output to second and third outputs (23, 24) by the extension module when the first signal is received at the first input. A determination is made to check whether the second signal is received at second and third inputs (3, 4) by the base module. A third signal is output by the base module over the first output when the first signal is received at the second and third inputs. The signals are selected as static signal. An independent claim is also included for a modular security system.
