The method involves acquiring a characteristic value of atmospheric pressure around car and/or altitude of the car. Engine speed and engine load are acquired, and an intake valve is controlled between a closed position and an open position according to the engine load and the acquired characteristic value. Dephasing of a distribution unit of an internal combustion engine is controlled according to the engine speed and the characteristic value when the intake valve is in the open position. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine.
