The device has a gas delivery device (14), which has a flow module for generating a gas stream (A), a gas outlet (24) and a gas inlet (34). A gas-carrying bypass unit is provided, by which the gas outlet and the gas inlet are coupled with each other for bypassing the gas delivery device. A plasma generator is coupled in the bypassed gas delivery device for enriching the gas stream with a disinfecting plasma, where the gas steam is generated by the flow module in the bypassed gas delivery device. The plasma generator is integrated in the bypass unit. An independent claim is included for a method for hygienic preparation of a device for mechanical ventilation of a patient.
