The method involves evaluating a CAD model of a component with assigned description features by a data processing device i.e. workstation, and determining materials (15) used for the component from the description features. Processing steps (16) required for manufacturing the component are determined (6) based on the CAD model and the determined material. Costs of the materials and the processing steps are retrieved (8) from a database (13) or derived from data stored in the database. The material cost and the processing cost are summed (12) to obtain manufacturing cost of the component.
