The method involves forming an inverter (10) by a controllable switch and a freewheeling diode to supply an electric machine (14) with multiphase electric current (I-u, I-v, I-w). The inverter is controlled such that successive different switching states of a controllable switch are aligned to provide an electric voltage in form of a voltage space pointer. The controllable switch is permanently closed in a value range of a temperature parameter i.e. temperature difference, of the controllable switch and the freewheeling diode. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for controlling an inverter (2) a motor vehicle drive strand.
