[Class 8 (i)] [Also in Group XL] Apparatus for separating suspended particles from a gas, such as air, comprises a flat disc 12 with spaced needles 13 around its periphery directed towards two discs 14 substantially parallel with the disc 12 and provided with central apertures 15. The discs are positioned relatively to one another by insulators 18 and brackets 19, and are oppositely charged to high potential, whereby a corona discharge takes place between the points 13 and the peripheral edges of the discs 14. The gas is thereby ionized and caused to flow inwardly between the discs where they are subjected to the non-discharging fields between the central parts. The particles are deposited on the discs 14 and the cleaned gas passes out through the central openings .15, which are preferably covered with gauze 16 to prevent discharges from the edges. The outer peripheries of the discs 14 are curved outwardly to provide minimum resistance to the flow of gas with maximum corona effect. The potentials may be obtained from an ironless Testa coil and thermionic rectifier, with a shunt condenser between the discs. The primary is connected to the source of current through a condenser and electromagnetic interrupter. The discs may be mounted on a rod fitting in a socket 20 and carried around by an operator bearing the electrical equipment in a pack.
