A protective device (20) for protecting a wearer's shoulder, includes at least one, but preferably two tensile elements (22). The first tensile element (24,26) extends around the anterior of the proximal humerus and exerts a posteromedially directed force to the proximal humerus, and the second tensile element (36) extends around the anterior of the shoulder in the glenohumeral joint area, medially of the proximal humerus and exerts a posterior directed force to the wearer's shoulder and scapula.
