PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon material that is less in generation of initial gas due to decomposition of a nonaqueous electrolyte and excellent in stability, and also less in capacity loss and good in initial charge/discharge efficiency, when the carbon material is included in a negative electrode, as an active material.SOLUTION: A carbon material according to the present invention contains globular natural graphite and a polymer having a main chain formed of a structural unit including a carbon atom. The polymer has a hetero atom that is directly connected to the carbon atom in the main chain and at least one of among an O atom, an N atom, an S atom and a P atom.
