Provided is an apparatus for detecting defect of a steel plate. The apparatus for detecting defect of a steel plate comprises: a first particle unit including a first magnetizing part arranged in the upper part of the steel plate to generate first magnetic flux for magnetizing the steel plate, and a first leakage flux detecting part for detecting leakage flux leaked by defect which exists in the surface or the inside of the steel plate by the generated first magnetic flux; and a second particle unit including a second magnetizing part arranged in the lower part of the steel plate to generate second magnetic flux for magnetizing the steel plate, and a second leakage flux detecting part for detecting for detecting leakage flux leaked by defect which exists in the surface or the inside of the steel plate by the generated second magnetic flux. The second particle unit can be arranged at a constant distance away from the first particle unit in a rolling direction in the lower part of the steel plate. Therefore, a problem in installation of the particle unit, which is caused by repulsive force between the upper and lower particle units, can be solved, and defect can be easily detected by increasing the size of leakage flux.
