<p>548,352. Chlorinating titanium - bearing material. CLEVELAND, F. J. (Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co.). March 7, 1941, No. 3141. Drawings to Specification. [Class 1 (iii)] In chlorinating titanium bearing material such as ilmenite ore by passing chlorine or other gaseous chlorinating agent through a pervious bed of the material at a temperature above about 600‹C. withdrawing vaporized chlorides from the surface of the bed and introducing fresh quantities of the material, the rate of introduction of material is regulated so that the bed measures at least about 6 inches from the hottest portion to the top to minimize condensation of iron chloride on the upper part of the bed. Carbon may be added and the material may be preheated, material being fed at the top and chlorine at the bottom. The reaction zone may be at a temperature of 700‹C.-1150‹C. and the material may contain 20-50 per cent. of titanium and 10-40 per cent. iron.
