Method for the manufacture of 5-alkoxymethylfurfural derivatives by reacting a glucose-containing starting material with an alcohol in the presence of a catalytic or sub-stoechiometric amount of acid catalyst. The catalysts are heterogeneous or homogenous and may be employed in a continuous flow fixed bed or catalytic distillation reactor. The ethers can be applied as a fuel or fuel additive and as starting materials for the synthesis of monomers for polymerisation reactions. |
