To provide a surface acoustic wave resonator in which it is possible to effectively suppress a distortion signal caused by non-linearity of an acoustic signal, such as a second-order distortion signal. A surface acoustic wave resonator in which a first IDT electrode (7) constituting a first IDT and a second IDT electrode (8) constituting a second IDT are formed on a first principal surface of a piezoelectric substrate (2), the electric field application direction for the first IDT electrode (7) and the electric field application direction for the second IDT electrode (8) being opposite each other in an axial direction in which the c-axis of the piezoelectric substrate (2) is projected onto the first principal surface (2a) of the piezoelectric substrate (2).
