摘要 An optically pumpable waveguide amplifier device (100) and a method of signal radiation amplification using the same are provided. The optically pumpable waveguide amplifier device (100) comprises a cladding material (10), a passive optical waveguide (20) embedded in the cladding material (10) and an active optical waveguide (30) comprising a gain material. The active optical waveguide (30) successively comprises an input portion (31), a middle portion (32-34) and an output portion (35), and the middle portion (32-34) successively comprises a first taper portion (32), an amplifier portion (33) and a second taper portion (34). The amplifier portion (33) is embedded in the cladding material (10) and facing the passive waveguide (20), such that a lower surface (SI) of the middle portion (32-34) is vis-®vis an upper surface (S2) of the passive waveguide (20). Each of the taper portions (32, 34) widens towards the amplifier portion (33), parallel to the lower surface (SI), a narrow end of each of the taper portions (32, 34) having a cross-sectional area that is smaller than a cross- sectional area of the passive waveguide (20) at the level of the narrow end.
