In this exhaust gas treatment method, exhaust gas generated in an electric furnace is guided into a slag holding furnace, and by supplying an oxygen-containing gas into the slag holding furnace, the combustible component in the exhaust gas is combusted; the exhaust gas after combustion is guided from the slag holding furnace via an exhaust pipe to a suction device; internal pressure of the electric furnace is regulated by introducing outside air into the exhaust pipe from an opening provided along the exhaust pipe; and an opening area changing means provided on said opening is used to change the surface area of the opening depending on changes in the internal pressure of the electric furnace.
