A computer implemented method and apparatus for version independent Point of Sale Activation (POSA) product download. The method comprises accessing a database, wherein the database comprises a plurality of entries associated with a plurality of Point of Sale Activation (POSA) cards available for purchase at a retail store; retrieving, from the database, a plurality of entries associated with a previous version of a software product, wherein the previous version of the software product has not been redeemed; generating a serial number for each retrieved entry, wherein each serial number is associated with a current version of the software product; and updating, in the database, each retrieved entry with the generated serial number.

1. A computer implemented method comprising:
providing packages by which a software product, unactivated prior to sale, is sold at a point-of-sale, each package comprising a redemption card and at least one of a software product or instructions for downloading a software product; accessing, at a server having at least one processor operatively associated with a memory, a database by execution of instructions by the at least one processor, wherein the database comprises a plurality of entries associated with packages at a currently available for purchase at a point of sale for activation of at least a previous version of the software product; retrieving from the database, by execution of instructions by the at least one processor, a plurality of entries respectively associated with the previous version of the software product, wherein the previous version of the software product has not been redeemed; generating, by execution of instructions by the processor, a serial number for each retrieved entry, wherein each serial number is associated with a current version of the software product; and updating, in the database, each retrieved entry with the generated serial number.
