Disclosed is a method and system for navigating an instrument relative to a subject. A reference device can be associated with the subject. The reference device can be moved while maintaining or allowing registration with an image space.

1. A method of maintaining a registration of a subject space to an image space, comprising:
determining an adjustment factor of moving a tracking device of a dynamic reference frame from a first position relative to a subject to a second position relative to the subject; and applying the adjustment factor to the registration of the subject space to the image space to maintain the registration.
