OPTICAL FIBER SENSOR USED FOR OIL CONDITIONING MONITORING

A detector (1) for oil condition monitoring includes an optical fibre (4) having a first end (6) and a second end (8) having an end face (10). A sensor body (2) has a reflecting surface (16) and a gap (14) in which a sample of the oil (A) may be received, the second end (8) of the optical fibre (4) being embedded in the sensor body (2) and having an end face (10) spaced from the reflecting surface (16) across the gap (14). Light emitted from the optical fibre (4) can pass through the sample of oil (A) and be reflected by the reflecting surface (16) back into the optical fibre (4). By interferometry of a first light signal reflected internally by the end face (10) and a second light signal reflected by the reflecting surface (16), the condition of the oil can be determined.
