SHUNT TRIP CONTROL CIRCUITS USING SHUNT TRIP SIGNAL ACCUMULATOR AND METHODS OF OPERATING THE SAME

An apparatus (100) for driving a shunt trip actuator (10) for a circuit breaker (20) or other switch includes an energy storage device (112) and an accumulator circuit (110) configured to store energy in the energy storage device responsive to a shunt trip control signal. The apparatus further includes a detector circuit (120) configured to generate a detection signal responsive to a state of the energy storage device meeting a predetermined criterion and a driver circuit (130) configured to drive the shunt trip actuator using the energy stored in the energy storage device responsive to the detection signal. The energy storage device may comprise a capacitor (C), and the accumulator circuit may comprise a current regulator (220) and a rectifier (210). The capacitor may be coupled and decoupled from the driver circuit and dectector circuit by an auxiliary contact set (22) of the switch.
