The present subject matter discloses a mobile device (100) and a method for detection and classification of an acceleration-based step activity of a user. According to the present subject matter, the mobile device (100) implements the described method, where the method includes receiving acceleration signals from an inertial sensor (130) in the mobile device (100) carried by the user performing a step activity. The acceleration signals are divided into data windows. Peaks are identified within a frequency spectrum of each of the data windows, and non-stationary activity windows are identified from amongst the data windows, based on the peaks within the frequency spectrum of each of the data windows. Further, valid peaks are determined within each of the non-stationary activity windows, and the step activity of the user is classified into one of predefined acceleration-based step activities based on the valid peaks within the each non-stationary activity window. |
