A method for affecting the proliferation of a neuroendocrine tumor cell comprising contacting a neuroendocrine tumor cell, wherein the neuroendocrine tumor cell comprises a small cell lung, ovarian or pancreatic tumor cell, with an effective amount of an antagonist of an NMDA glutamate receptor that selectively inhibits an NMDA glutamate type 2 receptor, and further wherein said antagonist inhibits or decreases the expression of the NMDA glutamate type 2 receptor or antagonizes the glutamate site, glycine site, polyamine site or channel pore of the NMDA glutamate type 2 receptor and inhibits or decreases NMDA glutamate type 2 receptor activity; and measuring the proliferation of the neuroendocrine tumor cell, wherein decreased proliferation results from the inhibition of the NMDA glutamate type 2 receptor. |
