<p>A motor vehicle lateral collision avoidance system where the position of a vehicle 100 within its own lane is monitored by means of a camera system 150 that detects lane markings and the adjacent lane is monitored for a possible collision hazard from another vehicle by means of front 130F and rear 130R radar sensors. The drivers intention to make a lane change manoeuvre is detected by monitoring turn indicators and steering wheel input and if a collision hazard with an object in the adjacent lane is then detected, feedback is provided to warn the driver and discourage further movement into the adjacent lane. The warning may be audio, visual, the application of a force or torque applied to the steering wheel in a direction opposing the movement into the adjacent lane, or a reduction of the amount of torque assist in the direction of the lane change.</p> |
