A method for recovering lithium ions, the method comprising: providing an article of manufacture having lithium ions; processing the article of manufacture to obtain a crude lithium-containing composition; introducing cyclic siloxanes to the crude lithium-containing composition so that the cyclic siloxane complexes with the lithium ions; preparing a liquid-liquid extraction composition having an organic solvent and water such that the complexes of the cyclic siloxanes and lithium ions partition into the organic solvent; and extracting the complexes of cyclic siloxanes and lithium ions by liquid-liquid extraction with an organic solvent and water.
