A fuel cell stack formed by stacking a plurality of fuel cells together, the fuel cells each being formed by stacking a membrane electrode assembly and separators together, the membrane electrode assembly including a pair of electrodes and an electrolyte membrane interposed between the electrodes, a coolant flow field being formed between adjacent ones of the separators for allowing a coolant to flow along surfaces of the separators, buffers being provided respectively at an inlet of the coolant flow field and at an outlet of the coolant flow field, a pair of coolant supply passages being provided on both sides of the buffer in a flow field width direction at the inlet of the coolant flow field, a pair of coolant discharge passages being provided on both sides of the buffer in the flow field width direction at the outlet of the coolant flow field, wherein the buffer has a triangular shape having a vertex protruding outward of the coolant flow field from within a range of the flow field width of the coolant flow field; and a recess protruding inward of the triangular shape is provided on a side of the vertex.
