1. An image processing apparatus comprising:
a selecting unit configured to select a medical image of a body part of a specific patient and a basic schema image of the body part that is not dependent on the specific patient, the selected medical image including the body part which is illustrated in the selected basic schema; an extracting unit configured to extract information for relating the selected basic schema image and medical image; a geometric correspondence determination unit configured to calculate a geometric correspondence between the basic schema image and the medical image based on the extracted information; a schema modifying unit configured to modify the basic schema image based on the calculated geometric correspondence so as to relate to the medical image; an image extracting unit configured to extract an image of a region of interest from the medical image, the extracted image being a part of the medical image, and the extracted image being smaller than the modified basic schema image; and a superimposing unit configured to generate a composite image by superimposing the extracted image on the modified basic schema image, wherein the composite image comprises the extracted image superimposed on the modified basic schema image such that the modified basic schema image is partially replaced by the extracted image, the extracted image being smaller than the modified basic schema image.
