A rotary valve cartridge assembly and valve are disclosed. The cartridge (9) has a recess in its top for receiving a transmission device (8) which can actuate the cartridge (9) in two modes. In the first transmission relationship (shown) the cartridge is rotated by the transmission device (8). In the second relationship rotation of the transmission device (8) moves the cartridge in a direction perpendicular to the axis to compress the cartridge onto a valve seat. In a described embodiment the transmission device (8) rotationally disengages from the recess and further rotation of the device (8) results in a protrusion (81) engaging with an inward projection (91) of the recess to move the cartridge into sealing engagement with the seat. The arrangement is particularly suitable for a ball valve assembly.
