A valve gear for an engine is provided with a camshaft body, a first cam, a second cam, and a rocker arm (5). A drive device (6) is provided for converting the rotation of the camshaft body to back-and-forth movement in an axial direction and transmitting the movement to the rocker arm (5) when the valve lift amounts of the first cam and second cam are both 0, the drive device (6) driving the rocker arm (5) along the axial direction. The drive device (6) is provided with an advancing cam and a retreating cam provided to the outer periphery of the camshaft body, and a slider (42) having a pair of arms (45, 46) that enclose the advancing cam and the retreating cam from both one side and another side in the radial direction of the camshaft body. The valve gear for an engine is also provided with an advancing cam follower held on one arm, the advancing cam follower selectively coming into contact with the advancing cam, and a retreating cam follower (48) held on the other arm, the retreating cam follower (48) selectively coming into contact with the retreating cam. A valve gear for an engine, provided with a drive device for switching the mode of operation with the advancing cam and the retreating cam as power sources, is formed compactly along the axial direction of a camshaft. |
