A method for creating an enhanced medium access control (MAC-e) packet data unit (PDU) as part of enhanced transport format combination (E-TFC) selection comprising: determining, via a wireless transmit/receive unit, a maximum number of bits 5 B currently available for a logical channel according to a minimum of either a remaining available payload or a remaining granted payload; filling the enhanced MAC-e PDU with bits from a segmentation buffer while leaving room for a header, the segmentation buffer including a segment to be transmitted; adding a corresponding header to the enhanced MAC-e PDU; and subtracting from B a total number of bits added to the enhanced MAC 10 ePDU.
