A hybrid vehicle controller according to the present invention is provided with a control means for controlling the output of an engine and a motor, the engagement and disengagement of a clutch, and the speed ratio of a continuously variable transmission, depending on operating conditions. When the vehicle is determined to be on a hill-climbing road during an electric vehicle mode in which the vehicle can travel using the driving force of the motor while the clutch is disengaged and the engine is stopped, the engine is started and the continuously variable transmission is forced to downshift to a predetermined speed ratio that allows starting on hill-climbing roads. |
