A light weight pre-stressed antiballistic article including a monolith ceramic plate/tile bonded to a thin lightweight thermal expansion material with an adhesive, characterized, in that the thermal expansion material has a thermal expansion coefficient at least 50% higher than the ceramic plate/tile, and the thermal expansion material is bonded to either the front face, back face or both faces of the ceramic plate/tile at a bonding temperature of between 50° C. and 250° C. with adhesive and subsequently cooled, whereby upon cooling, the bonded thermal expansion material contracts to a greater extent than the ceramic plate/tile, exerting compression stress on the ceramic plate/tile. |

1. A light weight antiballistic article comprising:
a compression stress induced monolithic ceramic plate/tile comprising a monolith ceramic plate/tile having bonded to at least one major surface thereof a lightweight thermal expansion material, said thermal expansion material having a thickness of between 0.1 mm and 2.0 mm, a thermal expansion coefficient at least 50% higher than the ceramic plate/tile, and selected from a metal or metal alloy in the form of a sheet or fabric or grid/net, said ceramic plate/tile and lightweight thermal expansion material having been bonded at a temperature of between 50° C. and 250° C. and subsequently cooled to ambient temperature resulting in a) an induced compression stress in said monolithic ceramic plate/tile in the range of 65 MPa to 620 MPa, b) less sensitivity for cracks propagation under impact, c) greater ability to resist penetration of bullets, and d) improved multi-hit capabilitycompared with a comparable non-stress induced monolith ceramic plate/tile. |
