[Class 2 (iii)] In the polymerization of iso-olefines by treatment with a metallic halide Friedel-Crafts' catalyst at a temperature below -10‹ F., the stability and colour of the product is improved by contacting it with an alkaline substance before allowing the temperature to rise above -10‹ F. Thus, isobutylene is polymerized in butane solution with boron fluoride at a temperature below -20‹ F. and lime is then added before the temperature is permitted to rise above the said temperature; the mixture is then heated to a temperature of 150-200‹ F., filtered, and passed with live steam into a flashing zone containing a petroleum lubricating oil solvent in order to separate the unvapourized high molecular weight polymer from more volatile materials. Other catalysts mentioned are aluminium chloride, zinc chloride and titanium tetrachloride. The lime is preferably added as a slurry with water, but the use of a slurry in a petroleum lubricating oil or liquid butane is also described. Other alkaline agents mentioned are sodium and potassium oxides, hydroxides and carbonates ; ammonia, ammonium hydroxide and carbonate ; and soda lime. Examples are given relating to continuous and batch processes for the production of isobutylene polymers. Specifications 498,526 and 501,670 are referied to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also includes a description of an apparatus suitable for carrying out the processes described in the examples. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
