553,529. Electron oscillators. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 1, 1940, No. 20. Convention date, Dec. 31, 1938. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] Polyphase currents of ultra-short wave length are generated by passing a velocity modulated electron beam past a succession of electrodes 46, 47, 48 of decreasing width and surrounding the tube 10. These electrodes have earthed rings 50 on each side of them and are connected through concentric conductors 52, 53 and suitable couplings to antennae 55, 56, 57 ; the conductors are quarter-wave-length long. The velocity modulated beam is produced. by oscillating potentials applied to a ring 30 surrounding the tube 10 and of such a length that the transit time past it of electrons corresponds approximately to a half cycle of the applied potential as described in Specification 518,015. After passing through the drift-space corresponding to the tube 32 the density modulated beam induces an oscillating potential in the half wave tube 40 which is connected to a quarter wave resonant circuit 42, 43, this further modulates the beam which passes through a second drift tube before passing through the output electrodes 46, 47, 48. |
