PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide hydrogenated coal tar pitch capable of obtaining pitch-based needle coke having a small thermal expansion coefficient and sufficiently suppressed puffing phenomenon.SOLUTION: Hydrogenated coal tar pitch obtained by performing a hydrogen treatment of coal tar pitch has a 0.02 wt% or less quinoline insoluble, a sulfur content of 0.33 wt% or less and a nitrogen content of 0.95 wt% or less. Pitch-based needle coke obtained from the hydrogenated coal tar pitch is also provided.
