The purpose of the present invention is to provide a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery that has excellent long-term cycle characteristics. This objective can be achieved by the non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery of the present invention, said non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery comprising: (I) a positive electrode (a) that contains a positive electrode active substance that is represented by formula (1) and that contains an excess of lithium, or a positive electrode (b) that contains a positive electrode active substance that is represented by formula (2) and a lithium-containing oxide in which the charge/discharge potential is 3.3 V or less with respect to counter electrode lithium and the average discharge voltage above 3.3 V is 3.4-5.0 V; and (II) a negative electrode that contains a graphitizable or non-graphitizable carbonaceous material in which the average layer spacing (d002) of the (002) plane as determined by X-ray diffraction is 0.345-0.400 nm, the crystallite size Lc(002) in the c-axis direction is 1.0-20.0 nm, the specific surface area is 1-50 g/m2, the butanol true density (ρBtOH) is 1.45-2.20 g/cm3, and the elemental sulfur content is 75-3,500 µg/g. |
