AUXILIARY STORAGE COMPARTMENT FOR AIRLINE PASSENGER CABINS

The auxiliary storage compartment (10) for airline passenger cabins (A) is installed between conventional overhead baggage bins (C) in an airline passenger aircraft. The compartment (10) has a slide-up door (14) that forms the floor and one wall of the compartment (10) when the door (14) is closed. When the door (14) is raised, any article(s) therein automatically deploy and fall from the compartment (10) due to gravity. The compartment (10) may contain a fire retardant blanket (20), first aid kit (32), or other article(s). The door (14) is lifted automatically by a motor (28) that draws a tensile cable (24) upward upon demand, the distal end of the cable (24) being attached to the upper portion of the door (14). Detection of a passenger cabin (A) fire or smoke triggers an audible alarm (36), with a sensor (34) receiving the audible signal to actuate the motor (28) and draw the door (14) upward.
