An exterior target frame is provided. Various embodiments involve exterior target frames for optical 3-D scanning of an object to assess dimensional quality of the object with respect to a dimensional specification of the object. The exterior target frame may comprise a frame base and a top frame, which may comprise a plurality of adjustable beams having a plurality of attached scanning targets. The attached scanning targets may comprise coded references points for the scanning of the object. The adjustable beams may be coupled to the frame base and configured to maneuver to specific locations indicative of dimensions of the scanned object. The top frame may comprise a plurality of pivot joints also having the plurality of attached scanning targets. The pivot joints may be configured to provide freedom of movement to the adjustable beams to allow the adjustable beams to deploy to a scanning position.
