Abstract The present invention relates to a method for use in an interactive program guide system for providing a 5 customized viewing experience to a user. The method comprises generating a viewing history for the user comprising program listings and associated program criteria. The viewing history is stored to a viewing history database. The method comprises determining at 10 least one of the associated program criteria from the viewing history that meets a user preference profile of the user. The at least one of the associated program criteria is applied to a program listings database to determine a first set of programs. The method comprises 15 determining from the first set of programs, a second set of programs not yet watched, to generate at least one personal viewing recommendation. The personal viewing recommendation is provided to the user.
